Ofsted

Ofsted finds Southgate Primary School to be a ‘Good’ School

We are delighted that our school has been rated ‘good’ in its most recent Ofsted inspection.  PLEASE CLICK HERE TO READ THE FULL REPORT

Inspectors observed Southgate as a friendly and respectful place, noting that “The school’s values of ‘aspiration, respect, resilience and co-operation’ filter through everything”.

They praised the pastoral support we provide for our children, stating that “Pupils’ physical and mental well-being are prioritised.” The report recognises that our children are well behaved, they contribute positively to lessons and play well together at social times, and that any child who needs extra care or support receives it quickly.

The inspectors saw that “Leaders at all levels in the school, and in the trust, are committed to an ambitious vision to improve outcomes for pupils” and the report highlights how this starts from the early years with a thorough induction programme for Reception children; this ensures staff know children’s individual starting points and helps those children “get off to a flying start”. We are grateful for the support we have received from the GLF Schools’ Foundation to create a framework for our Early Years team to meet and get to know incoming Reception children before they join in September.

We are particularly pleased that the inspectors recognised our “ambitious curriculum”, noting that teachers have good subject knowledge and are ambitious for our children, consistently setting high expectations for learning. They note that the curriculum has “been designed so that it is equally accessible to all pupils, including those with SEND” and recognise that our children achieve well academically.

The inspection report acknowledges our “positive culture of reading.” The inspectors saw that “Pupils enjoy talking about their favourite books and authors and exhibit a real love for reading”, stating that early reading is taught well, and teachers are well trained in delivering the phonics programme.

We would like to thank everyone within the school community, including those who provide support from the trust, who has worked tremendously hard over the past months and years to ensure the school is moving in the right direction as we aim to deliver the best start in life for our children.

Thank you to everyone within the school community and the wider GLF Schools team for their support. We have come a long way, but this is just the beginning of our journey to excellence, ensuring all children at Southgate grow, learn and flourish.

Yours Sincerely

Miss Charlotte Taylor
Head of School
